Modern baby gate

I a giving this to my grandson for Christmas. It was requested by his mama. It looks like it is very strong & studied Asa well as good looking.

Happy to see a baby gate that actually blends with the millwork in a modern home which is why I bought it. My sister also got one. It matches our home pretty well. The design of the plastic hinges and latch system leaves something to be desired. It's broken for what is now the third time. Granted, it is 7 years old now and survived 4 children, but it would be nice to get more options in premium gates from evenflo.
Beautiful wood finish;good value
9/3/2014 by COLDave01 from Odenton MD
Product arrived well ahead of promised delivery date. Nice finish and met my expectations however instructions very confusing, difficult to interpret which let to a 4 hour installation. Plastic hardware disappointing. Gate release hard to disengage. Requires alot of pressure. Easier to just lift-up on gate to pass over latch to open.
Quality gate that should work
7/22/2014 by AuntieGrammy
Color is a bit redder than expected. The hardware, as usual is poor. We had to buy better 1/2" wood screws, I think the ones we had were machine screws. We've had this gate before and it works great to keep little ones away from areas they can't go; steps. It'll work to keep the baby out, not sure about the 4 year old. My problem with this is that you don't have to push the lever in and up to release the gate, it's easier to just lift the entire unit up. That may be why so many complain about hinges failing; don't lift the door, push the lever and release it correctly.
Perfect and elegant

I bought this gate 10 years ago and its still working perfectly. It looks great with my hardwood floors.
I bought this gate 11 years ago, it has held up against 5 dogs and 3 toddlers. I started searching for this gate today and could not believe I found it. Yes I have to replace it a new dog addition to the family is scared of bad weather and when I did not get to her in time when it started thundering she jumped the gate and broke the mounted latch from the wall. The latch is a durable plastic but it held of this long. Oh and not to mention teens running into it like their magical creatures (yes same toddlers that are teens not lol believe me you will not regret buying this gate. So stop looking and click the buy button.
The box clearly indicates this can be installed to swing both ways. Not true. The way the latch works it can only swing one way. It's too late to return as I've already had it installed. The gate itself is decent if you need something that only goes one way.
Love the gate. I didn't like the directions because it was so unclear. Quality of the gate is so nice.

This gate when installed looks like a piece of furniture. Very nice - does not look like you stuck something there to keep kids in or dogs out. Looks far better in person than the picture gives it credit.
Frustrating to put together
3/18/2014 by eggrollapes from Fort worth
The gate looks great once it's installed. This is our second of these gates since the first one broke within 6 months. I forgot how irritating it was for my husband to put together or I would have bought a different one this time around.

This gate is perfect. It serves my purpose and goes with my décor. Also easy to install
Good quality. Very sturdy. My son could open all the cheap metal gates. This one seems very safe!
easy to use and nice looking gate
no problem to install, gate is very easy to use and looks great too. we look at many gates and we are very happy we purchased this one.
Excellent baby gate, quality!
11/22/2013 by Lucille26 from West Bend, WI
We have 4 ft wide open stairwell leading to basement. This gate is perfect for top of stairs. Solid construction; it screws into wood/drywall and is extremely secure. It's also beautiful; the auburn color matches woodwork nicely. It's definitely not cheap or chintzy like so many gates on the market. This is actually our 2nd gate like this in 10 years. The first one was rough-handled by 4 kids so it was time for a new one. I was very glad to see it was still being made and available to buy. You will love it!

The dark wood matches my hardwood floors & banister. Made with good quality wood. Expanded to fit my 41" stairs. BUT, best to hire someone to install it! Took a contractor 2 hours to install at the top of the stairs. But now that it's there, it is beautiful. Easy to use.
Gate works well, installed in about an hour.

Great style, color and quality
5/28/2013 by MamaOrderedAGate from Iowa
We saw this same exact baby gate on Amazon.com. I just happened to look around online and found the same one at Walmart. I was hesitant to order it, thinking it would be different, but the gate was perfect (and I'm picky)! The color and finish was great! It did take a while to install, only because I had to make sure it was mounted into studs, and I wanted it to hang/swing straight. I took others' advice and purchased our own screws to avoid anything breaking during installation. Overall, great product!
Not what is advertised on the box
1/14/2013 by ratherdisappointed from chicago, Il
Right on the box it says the gate can swing both ways .. or just one way depending on the hardware. When you go to install the latch the instructions state that the gate is intended to swing only one way. The only latching hardware provided allows the gate to swing one way. The hing system .. simple eye bolts sitting on plastic hinges .. has so much play in it that you do not need to unlatch the gate but simply lift up on the gate because the hinges move around even when locked down. Maybe a baby won't be lifting up on the gate, to figure how to open it, but it took my toy dog 2 seconds to figure out all you had to do is try to push under the gate and the gate lifts above the locking latches. Raising the locking latches higher than instructions causes other issues. Really poor gate system. I will likely be heading to the hardward store and try to figure out a way to make this expensive gate gate usable by rigging tacky closures or hinges to it Don't waste your money.
Very complex installation, missing hardware
Very complex installation, does not include required hardware. It looks good but does nto work good if you have the main swing installed on the dry wall.
Nice looking gate
6/2/2012 by aebag4 from shelbyville, tn
I purchased this to prevent our rottweiler from having access to the main part of the house. It went up easily, although I took the others advice, and started installation by using the template on the wall. It also is a very attractive and sturdy gate. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the plastic hardware that it comes with. So far it is fine but only time will tell how well it will function. I would definitely recommend this gate!
5/4/2012 by MrsPMA from Mass
The gate itself is nice, but installing it was a nightmare. My husband is very handy and mild mannered but a few colorful words came out of his mouth while trying to install this. The instructions were terrible and it even came with the wrong hardware. Be cautious about this product. It is not for a novice handyman!
Evenflo Home Decor Wood Swing Gate, Dark Auburn
12/19/2011 by Niko5099 from East Stroudsburg, PA
A very nice classy looking gate and the money is well worth it. Delivered quickly. I though had to return it because I read wrong. The max opening is 52" and I needed 72". very attractive and worth the purchase.

I chose a wood gate to match our home since it will be up there for a while and I wanted it to look nice. I also didn't want anything at the bottom to have to step over at the top of the stairs. We've had it up for a week and a half and it's great so far. It matches our home beautifully and it easy to use, even when my hands are full coming home from work.
My husband was able to install this himself. Better quality than other's for the same price. It was a bit darker than I thought, but blends well with our oak trim.
Very sturdy and looks great!
8/6/2011 by Herrera311 from Chubbuck, ID
We bought this gate to be at the top of the stairs for our 6 month old. It matches our oak banister perfectly and is very sturdy. It would also be impossible for a baby to open and even our 3 year old struggles to open it. This gate would also be great for animals and it can be easily removed and put back whenever needed. The gate was really hard to install, mostly because of horrible directions. The template that comes in the box is almost useless and it is hard to get it perfectly aligned. The screws are also aluminum and broke off when we tried to screw them into the oak banister so we used stronger screws. Now that it's up though, we love it!
Wonderful Gate!! Very easy to put up and looks great!

Love this gate! Matched my wood and varnish almost perfectly! Seems to be holding up well so far.
Mixed Feelings on this Product
6/29/2010 by ChrisInValpo from Valparaiso, IN
We have ordered a total of 3 of these gates. The first two arrived in great condition, look terrific, and work perfectly. The third gate that we ordered arrived with manufacturers defects in the finish. BOTH of the replacements that they sent us had the same defect. We finally gave up and got our money back. We love the first two, but can't seem to get a third one of the same quality. Very disappointing!
Good, but not perfect
4/12/2010 by DealFinder327
It's a nice product, but it isn't perfect. The price from Walmart was the best we found, but the free site-to-store shipping took FOREVER. As for the gate - the instructions were HORRIBLE. "Put part b over part a and align mark a on part b to corner of part c..." They made about as much sense as that. I finally just used common sense and did what I thought looked right. The finish on the gate wasn't very good - there were drip marks in the polyurethane and bits here and there where the stain wasn't perfect. Most of those were on the bars you attach to the wall, so we figured it wouldn't be as noticeable. The latching mechanism is extremely hard to work, but I suppose that's best if you were using it for kids (we're using it for pets). However, you need to pretty much use two hands to open it since the latch is hard to engage, so I don't know how you'd get it open if you were holding anything. All in all, it was good for the price and for what we needed (for a nice looking pet gate).

Good workmanship, not sure how durable the plastic hinges and latch will prove to be. Instructions are worthless. If you are an accomplished do-it-yourselfer, you will have no problems. If not, better get some help.

Very easy to setup.
8/28/2009 by JaydensMommyPA from Pa
I really like the look of this gate. I like that it installs to the wall and is safe to have at the top of the staircase. It is nice and high and fits wide doorways. It was fairly easy to install. I do think it was a bit expensive though, compared to other gates... the quality is decent... but it's not hardwood or anything. I like that the whole gate swings... but i don't like that it only swings one way. Plus it doesn't swing all the way. If you swing it too far it looks like it will break from the mount. I'm worried about my son swinging it/pushing it open too far!
6/28/2009 by kdfarr from Tecumseh, MI
This is a beautiful gate and a nice change from the old plastic gates we have been using. We have a very steep stairway that leads to our basement. The mounting supplies provide a secure attachment to assure the security needed. We had 2 problems with the installation. First, several of the screws broke. I would recommend buying brass screws before installing. Second, the instructions were terrible and it took my husband several hours and tries to get it right. I am very pleased with the outcome and wish I had found this product sooner.
6/20/2009 by Lkin4Deals from Denver, CO
This gate is very sturdy, easy to remove, and has a beautiful finish. My husband said the gate was easy to put together. His only complaint was that the instructions could have been a little better. The gate is easy to use and seems durable. The only problem I could see is that the opening mechanism is on the side of the gate (between the gate and the wall), so it could be difficult to open if you have really big oversized fingers. This gate replaces a less expensive gate that broke. I think this gate is well worth the money. Looks much nicer and is much sturdier!
Not sure yet
3/30/2009 by luvbugsmom from MN
My husband set this up and said all the warnings we had read about putting it together were true...he still needs to tweak a few things, although it's up and working. Our son doesn't realize we have it yet, so not sure how it will hold up. It's beautiful and easy to use, so sure hope it does it's job, too. I gave this 3 stars or less on the things I don't know about yet. As of right now it works great. One thing- we are able to just lift the gate to open it instead of using the push-in button to open it. That is what my husband will be tweaking and fixing. Don't know if out little one would figure that out, but just in case, we don't want it to have have the option. But so far, we love it. well, my husband just likes it. I would have liked it to look more finished....our area is 45 inches across so the wood isn't complete. don't know how to describe it.
Nice Gate Horrible Instructions
2/1/2009 by EvaandBob from Illinois
Instructions to install the gate were very poor and hard to understand. Once the gate was installed, it functions very well and looks great.
Love this Baby Gate...
1/27/2009 by GEORGIAMOM1111 from Columbus
I looked everywhere to find a baby gate that wasn't plastic or a natural wood color and was thrilled when I found this one. We needed a gate to go at the top of our stairs leading to the basement that didn't scream baby gate because the stairs are seen from our front door and foyer. I am SO happy that I found this one. It is a wonderful color wood and a perfect match to our hardwood floors, I was nervous that it would be too light but it is a perfect match. I had our handyman install it for me because I had read mixed reviews online about the difficulty of the installation, complaints about the durability of the screws, etc. and he had no problem at all. It really looks very nice and have recommended it to several friends already. It also opens and closes with ease! Could not be happier with our selection!!!
Set aside a couple of hours....
3/18/2008 by MJWinSTL from O'Fallon, MO
I opened the package and thought, oh, what a beautiful gate! So much nicer than those ugly metal ones! Should have known something would go wrong... Our set up is that of a wall (dry wall) on one side and a spindled bannister/railing on the other. Be sure to hit a home improvement store BEFORE you try and put this thing up if you have a similar set up. You will need a board about as long as your post, stain to make it all matchy-matchy, wall anchors and some sanity (which our store was currently out of). Attach the board to your post before trying to assemble the gate. Take it out, read the directions and you will see what I am talking about. Once installed (literally 6 hours later due to the extra trip, staining, drying, etc...) the gate looks and functions beautifully. Exactly what we wanted - minus the headache of the installation.
Blends great with home stairway
3/9/2008 by SatisfiedClient
The Evenflo Wood Swing Gate was a little hard to assembly. I advise to have a handy person to do it, since the instructions are not totally clear. If you want a product that blends well with wood stairways, this is the one. It is also easy to use, it is sturdy and provides the necessary safety to the children.
Nice gate, directions are awful
3/8/2008 by An anonymous customer from Apalachin, NY
I love the gate and it works great now that it is set up, but the instructions are poorly written. Overall, I love the product, evenflow should rework their instructions.
2/29/2008 by Shallina from Springfield, Mo
The gate looks great and matches our floors very well. I am very pleased with this product and would buy again. I rated an overall 4 because the directions were not correct, and if it were not for my very handy husband, would have been a nightmare to install.
Openings made easy!!!
2/10/2008 by Rhetts9 from Shiloh, IL
The gate is great. It works very well and has a very nice appearance. It matches the trim in my home and the wood on my staircase. The gate looks so much nicer that the plastic gates and you can totally and easily remove it when not in use.It opens and closes easily. The only drawback is the instructions for installation are not user friendly and left a few things out. But go slow, think it through and you'll make it. Highly Recommend this product.

I'm a Licensed Home Daycare Provider, so this gate gets a lot of use everyday. It has held up so well that I just ordered another one for another part of my home. I also love the way this gate looks. It's worth every penny.
A must have as style meets function!
1/23/2008 by mom2girls1boy from O'fallon MO
I purchased 3 of these gates and love them. We couldn't function without them. We put them up on all the stairway openings and they match perfectly with our existing woodwork we had to purchase longer stakes to mount them but it was worth it they are very durable and look fantastic we use them many times everyday and they are so much better than any of their cheaper counterparts! Go ahead and spend the extra money for these gates they are worth every penny!
Just What we needed!
We needed a gate for our puppy to help keep him in the kitchen until he was potty trained. The product kept him in AND is a very nice compliment to our home decor.
Nice looking product
12/24/2007 by GWalG from Michigan
This is a very attractive looking product that also works well. We bought it to keep our 2 small dogs out of the living room and it serves the purpose jus t fine. I would consider myself reasonably handy with tools and had no problem installing this gate. I can see where it might be a struggle for those less mechanically inclined. I'm very happy with the purchase.
A very disappointing product. Instructions were inaccurate and overly complicated. The finish of the wood is atrocious. Apparently they place the pieces in the box while the varnish is still wet, because the wood was "glued" to the inside of the cardboard box. It took a lot of work to clean off the paper that was stuck in the finish. Fit and finish of the latch hardware was sloppy.

Ease of use.Good instructions.
have someone else install it
12/9/2007 by troseinwi from wisconsin
It's a nice gate if you don't mind spending a few hours installing and drilling holes in the banister. This gate was really a pain to put up but once it was done it looked good. I would have gone with another gate if it wasn't for the fact that we have OVERSIZED STAIRCASES. Honestly- that is the only reason I would buy this gate.
12/7/2007 by lovemovies7 from Derby, KS
The baby gate appears to be of good quality and looks very nice. It was somewhat difficult to install though. It looks great now that it's up.
A much better look.
11/29/2007 by my2kidzz from Kittanning, PA
I bought this gate for my dogs and nephew, and it does look good in my archway. It is definately not made of $100 worth of materials, but it was the look I wanted. My husband and I had to redrill some of the holes because they didn't line up, and the instructions have much to be desired. If your handy, you'll be fine. Overall, I'm very pleased with the gate, and would recommed it for children and/or pets.
Great Permanent Solution
11/19/2007 by pinni from indianapolis, IN
This gate is used as a pet gate for our home and as a permanent solution to a plastic dilemna. It is not only beautiful, it solves the issue of having to step over, adjust, or spring load the gate. It fits in better with our decor and swings freely. Although a little pricier than most "pet gates", we love the gate as it is easier to use and keeps our Aussie in check. It is sturdy and doesn't look cheap, in fact it looks like well made wood work.
11/2/2007 by QM2TicTac from Denver, CO
This gate was terrible! The directions were nearly impossible to comprehend. The parts were not labeled so I had no idea what was what. I could not even tell how to attach the parts because the pictures were so inaccurate. I spent 2 hours trying to get it put together (you need tape, and a drill), then gave up and returned it. It was a mess from the beginning because when it was shipped site-to-store, the box was already mangled and the gate was scratched. I decided to take it anyway because I needed it immediately and I knew it would get scratched by my 10 month old anyway. I could not deal with all the other issues though.
We bought this gate to go at the bottom of our stairs, and hoped it would match our existing bannister. It does and so far we are impressed. My 3 year old is not able to open it by himself yet. When we ordered the gate, the first one looked like it had been put in the box with the finish still wet, so it stuck to the box. The people at Evenflo quickly replaced it.
